| Jim Dembkoski's Horror Review #1 - Bad Moon (1996) |
A direct-to-video werewolf flick that stands a good distance higher than most of it's kind. While not as gory as werewolf films can be, it delivers its horror the old fashioned way... through suspense and cinematic tension. There is a slight deviation from the usual werewolf-chasing-humans-who-find-a-way-to-kill-it formula. Solid B-film actors Michael Pare and Mariel Hemingway shine as the brother-turned-werewolf and successful sister who takes him in. But the real star of this film is the family German Sheperd, Thor. Thor is the only one who knows Pare's true identity, and tries to protect his family from the beast that shares the breakfast table with them. If you're a fan of werewolves and are looking for a change, check out Bad Moon.
The Good: Thor is fantastic, and the sole reason to watch this film, if for no other. Also one of the best werewolf costumes ever made.
The Bad: Not as gory as some other werewolf films, but I wouldn't exactly pop this in over Sesame Street at your kid's birthday party...
The Ugly: The fight between dog and werewolf is brutal... You'll want to run out and buy a German Sheperd.
